At the same time as Roosevelt’s teddy bear appeared, a German, Robert Steiff, designed and produced a stuffed bear. It was presented at the Leipzig Toy Fair in March 1903. Three thousand bears were exported to the US and immediately became popular.
By 1906, other manufacturers made stuffed bears and the craze was on! Adult women and children were seen carrying them and being photographed with them. Even President Roosevelt had a “Teddy” bear as his mascot in his re-election campaign.
