“Teddy” bears are so named after US President Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt. It came about after a hunting trip where President Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear that had been tied to a tree for him to kill, calling it unsportsmanlike. A cartoon appeared in The Washington Post on November 116, 1902 showing the incident.
Later Berryman cartoons made the bear smaller and cuter. Seeing these cartoons, Morris Michtom, a Brooklyn store owner, created a new toy. He put it in his shop window with a sign, “Teddy’s bear.
From that time until now, handmade and mass-produced bears have been designed in a full spectrum of colors and wide range of fabrics. While predominately designed for children, teddy bears have become quite a collectible item. Find great prices on all styles and name brand teddy bears and more here.
